Kimmel Responds to “Sucker Punch” with an Uppercut
There were a few interesting tidbits from Oprah's interview with Jay Leno yesterday. One of the more notable quotes was Leno calling Kimmel's jokes during last week's appearance on "The Jay Leno Show" a "sucker punch."
Above are Kimmel's "highlights" of the Oprah appearance. Below are the "sucker punches."
And here is Kimmel showing the Leno "sucker punch" statement from Oprah followed by his full explanation of what led up to the "10 at 10" appearance.
Finally, an excerpt from "Jimmy Kimmel Live" in which Kimmel spends the entire hour impersonating Leno. This stunt sent everything else in motion.
If anything, this is a good lesson on how to successfully insert yourself into a story that otherwise has nothing to do with you and reap the free publicity. A smart move on Kimmel's part since his ratings lag far behind the likes of Leno and Letterman despite the fact he's usually funnier than both.
Letterman's biggest contribution to the late night controversy thus far has been the introduction of Jay "Big Jaw" Leno into the vernacular: the most recent example of how the format's all-time ace has lost far too much zip off his fastball.
