PCW Episode 1: Why Modern Day Wrestling is No Good
Stephen Platinum believes the big boys of Pro Wrestling have lost their way. The Georgia based promoter has dreams of taking Platinum Championship Wrestling to the lofty heights occupied by WWE and TNA.
Full story transcript below:
Stephen Platinum, Platinum Championship Wrestling Promoter:
- The reason I do this is because I'm stupid, stupid man.
Platinum (watching show on monitor):
- Move, move, move. For God sakes, go!
Logan Mason, Professional Wrestler (Interview):
- He's an a--h--- and he'll admit to it.
Platinum (watching monitor):
- (groans)
Platinum (interview):
- We have the good fortune of just having a lot of people I like wrestle for us...
Platinum (watching monitor):
- Save it! Fix it! Do it!
Platinum (interview):
- ... so I don't have to run things with an iron hand.
Platinum (watching monitor):
- I'm about to f---ing break something.
Platinum (interview):
- Though you wouldn't know it watching me watch the show on the monitor where I lose my mind, throw things, and I'm crazy.
Platinum (getting up from watching monitor):
- You officially just got your match ended.
Platinum (interview):
- I think that there's sort of an integrity and there's sort of an underlying thing that pro wrestling is supposed to be about that has been completely lost by WWE, and doubly so by TNA. It actually gets me physically angry to watch their show and to think about the money that they're pissing away. It appears that they are embarrassed to be involved in the pro wrestling business. WWE goes out of its way to call itself everything but pro wrestling. They don't have wrestlers, they have superstars and the only two businesses I know of where everybody's a star is wrestling and porn. We can reverse that.
Platinum (locker room speech at show intermission):
- Don't tell the crowd to shut up. If I have to hear that one more time I'm going to f---ing shoot myself.
Platinum (interview):
- We have to be a big deal. We have to be number 3 in the country.
Platinum (intermission speech):
- Think of something else other than "shut up."
Oscar Worthy, Professional Wrestler (in ring promo):
- No, I don't suck. I succeeded and that's why you're jealous.
Platinum (interview):
- When the wrestlers come to me to work out their matches all I tell them is how I would prefer for it to end and how long they have. I don't tell them anything else.
Nemesis, Professional Wrestler (talking to Platinum):
- Is this a match with me and him or...?
Platinum (talking to Nemesis):
- It's not a match but you guys can get physical.
Platinum (interview):
- That's what pro wrestling used to be: spontaneous, truly audience interactive.
Nemesis (in ring promo):
- Of course you was.
Fan (to Nemesis):
- Were.
Nemesis:
- Were? (Audience laughter) Were? I'm going to ignore you right now.
Platinum (interview):
- And that's what I would like to bring back.
Platinum (ring announcing):
- He is wrestling's demigod! Mason!
Logan Mason, Professional Wrestler (interview):
- A god amongst mere mortals. He's above everyone. I kind of think how would Peyton Manning act if he was a jackass? I kind of feel like this is how he would act.
Mason (interview):
- I'm a banker by day.
Mason (to bank customer):
- I'm at the branch in Atlantic Station Monday through Friday.
Mason (interview):
- For me, and most people who smile and kiss a-- all week long, it's fun to have a couple hours to go out there and yell at people.
Mason (in ring):
- You've got one shot!
Mason (interview):
- Not that that's the person I am but it's nice to have that dichotomy in your life.
Platinum (interview):
- They're giving their heart to me and I'm not paying them a dime. Not having money means I can't afford to make mistakes. Like tonight's show to me? Probably C+, B- and we can't have C+, B- shows. We can't afford them. Every move we make, it feels like I'm betting the house so I'm scared. And I'm also scared that I've wasted 17 years doing this stuff that I could've been a professor. Could've been a lawyer. Probably would've been good at either one. Could've provided a better life for my wife and kid than running off and joining the circus. And now I run a circus of my own. It's all I've ever wanted. I'm just convinced that now that I get to do things my way with the people that I love in place, all pulling, it can't fail.
Mason (interview):
- He's fair and he's got a good heart. He's one of the good guys.
Platinum (interview):
- We just keep doing shows and people keep seeing them and hopefully we generate enough ground swell that some young network goes, 'Wrestling could be some relatively inexpensive programming that will get us an audience. Like it's always been. I've never achieved greatness in the business and selfishly I want it so badly.
Platinum (post show locker room speech):
- So thank you guys very much. Great show.
