Will Ferrell as “Rojo Johnson”
Call it a ceremonial first pitch that just happens to occur in the middle of a game...
Which is why it was, if nothing else, a great marketing ploy to give the Round Rock Express their biggest crowd of the season. More than 10 thousand people showed up to watch Will Ferrell come on in relief in the 6th inning for the home team. One pitch later, he was ejected and the game continued on as scheduled.
The actual execution of the stunt wasn't quite as good as the idea but the concept was great enough to sell the tickets to begin with, which is really what matters most to a ball club's bottom line. I doubt anyone would walk away feeling cheated either, considering there's only so much you can accomplish comedically when a game still has to be played.
The best Will Ferrell brush with sports still has to be his Ron Burgundy interview of Tom Izzo.
And while on the "comedian in character interviewing a sports celebrity" tangent, the overall best in recent memory has to be Sacha Baron Cohen as "Ali G" interviewing David and Victoria Beckham.
