Robert Smith: Almost half the NFL is using HGH

Former All-Pro Vikings running back Robert Smith hasn't played in 10 years... but that doesn't make him hesitate about what's going on in the modern NFL locker room.
In light of a report linking Washington Redskins receiver Santana Moss to a doctor being investigated for distributing HGH to athletes, Smith had this to say to Dan LeBatard on 790 the Ticket in Miami about the prevalence of HGH in the league:
"I think it's more than 40% of the league. It's definitely approaching half of the league. That's my opinion. I think the guys know that it's undetectable, at least currently with any of the tests that the union is going to agree to. So they know that they can get away with it and if they can, they're going to go ahead and use it. Just like guys with steroids back in the 80's, it wasn't technically illegal in the league but they knew they weren't going to get caught so they went ahead and used it."
LeBatard didn't follow up about how he's come to this conclusion or if Smith himself was involved in it during his career.
Regardless, 40% is a massive number. It's also the latest indication that athletes act just like many others in the professional world: willing to color outside the lines to get an edge if they believe they're not going to be caught.
And no one ever believes they're going to be caught.
