Jim Joyce: “A bad situation turned into a pretty good situation.”

Posted on June 4, 2010

Home-plate umpire Jim Joyce reacts after Detroit Tigers Magglio Ordonez scored against the Cleveland Indians during the third inning of their MLB baseball game in Detroit

Umpire decides to take a call from "The Today Show" to put a bow on an eventful few days...

Really, the most important thing gathered from the 4 minute conversation is that our sports society won't turn another guy into Steve Bartman. Why?

Because Jim Joyce reacted in a way that is the polar opposite of the unfortunate Chicago Cubs fan.

Joyce immediately faced the music, showed the proper remorse, and humanized his story. Bartman went into hiding and has stayed there.

Joyce talking to Matt Lauer this morning:

"I probably have been at an all-time low and steadily climbing to possibly an all-time high, I guess."

Joyce describes the scene a day after he blew the big call, when he showed back up for work, and the pitcher who would have had the perfect game met up with him at home plate.

"When (Jim Leyland) sent (Armando) Galarraga over to the plate, you know, I'm very Irish and very emotional... I guess it was a great time for that situation to happen and when he came out, it just hit me hard again."

"A bad situation turned into a pretty good situation."
