Ron Artest’s Biggest Musical Influence? The 1920′s

Posted on June 23, 2010

June 21, 2010 - Los Angeles, CALIFORNIA, United States - epa02215238 Los Angeles Lakers players Ron Artest (L) and Sasha Vujacic (R) play around during the Lakers Victory Parade in Los Angeles, California, USA, 21 June 2010. The Lakers defeated the Boston Celtics to claim their second consecutive NBA championship title. Over 500,000 fans lined Figueroa Street as the Lakers players road in flat-bed vehicles through downtown Los Angeles.

Hop in this LA Laker's car, and you'll hear less Lil Wayne and more Louis Armstrong...

During the epic Ron Artest post NBA Finals celebration, you heard plenty about the new single called "Champion" that was about to be unleashed on an unsuspecting nation. You also might not have suspected the biggest musical influences that spark such creative genius. As told by Artest to the Dan Patrick radio show:

"I'm a 1920's guy. My favorite music is 1920's then I go '30's and '40's. So I don't really know exactly how every rapper sounds today because I don't even have them really in my car."

Patrick is usually good at following up on questions like these but sadly dropped the ball here so we have no idea if Artest is more into George Gershwin or counts himself a Bessie Smith kind of guy.

Listening to music from that era gives me a great appreciation... for not having grown up in that era.

June 17, 2010 - Los Angeles, CALIFORNIA, UNITED STATES - epa02208508 Los Angeles Lakers' head coach Phil Jackson (L) hugs teammate Ron Artest after defeating the Boston Celtics during game seven of the NBA Finals at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California, USA, 17 June 2010.
