Former SEC Coaches not Impressed by Boise State

"This is a grown man's league..."
It's not often that former rival coaches agree on much, but Gene Stallings and Pat Dye have a consensus when it comes to their feelings on the Boise State football team's chances of competing in the Southeastern Conference.
Sharing his thoughts on the Paul Finebaum radio show prior to the Broncos' Monday night victory over Virginia Tech, Stallings was asked to predict the number of victories Boise could rack up in an 8 game SEC schedule:
"I think they'd win about 3 maybe."
"This is a grown man's league and I think they'd have a hard time week after week."
The former Alabama coach's thoughts were echoed by his former Auburn counterpart:
"Didn't Boise State come to play Georgia a couple of years ago?"
"I tell you what, there's a lot of folks in this conference that can whip you."
"Like Coach said, this is a big boy's league."
Could Monday night's performance have swayed their opinions? Unlikely.
Geography will never allow Boise State to prove its mettle beyond the occasional early non-conference and bowl game scenarios.
Speaking of those scenarios, Bronco fans better pray for every other FBS team to finish with 2 losses if they harbor any hope of making it to the BCS title game.
The immediate future doesn't look any brighter once they leave the WAC for what will be a depleted Mountain West missing Utah and BYU. The only thing that will be guaranteed in 2011 is that Boise and TCU won't have to suffer the indignity of facing each other in a BCS bowl game while diminishing the opportunity for both to reach that ultimate goal.

That’s a typical comment from some stuffed shirt good ol’ boys from down south. They don’t want no upstarts unterruptin’ the good thang they got a’goin, y’all understand?

You take away their right to comment when you take away their drivers license. Senile old men are a nonissue in this debate.
September 8th, 2010 - 23:47
the arrogance of these morons! What kills me is that if you are going to guess about what would happen if BSU was in the SEC, you better also give them the benefit of the doubt there would also be more money coming into BSU’s program and the recruiting advantage would be a lot more advantageous than what it is now for BSU….but let them continue to spew this mouth diahrea…it makes it a lot more fun rub it in when Boise wins
September 8th, 2010 - 23:57
This coaches have a lot invested in their teams and conference…of course their answer will be against Boise State…they are embarrassed enough as it is… It’s all about the money and they know it… funny how people can be scared of a good team…
September 9th, 2010 - 00:10
Isn’t the SEC also the conference with all the teams in it on probation at least once for violations of NCAA rules at one point or another. I guess if you ain’t cheating, you ain’t trying. So Boise must not be trying. Also why is it that only Ole Miss of the big conferences schedule to play Boise? I guess the lure of playing a D1-AA team is too tempting. Seriously you can’t rip them for not playing a tougher schedule then refuse to play them because you might loose. WTF??
September 9th, 2010 - 00:31
The things that people aren’t realizing…especially those two old fossils that were quoted…is that if BSU was in the SEC, they’d be recruiting and getting SEC players. Or course they’d have a tougher time competing with what they have right now, because they can’t get the blue chippers because of the conference they’re in. But they’re beating Pac-10 and ACC teams with WAC+ players. If they could get the blue chippers by being in a BCS conference, they’d be able to compete week in and week out. All of these BCS conference people are just upset with all of the success that BSU has been able to accomplish in a much shorter amount of time than those other schools. Plus it’s the big boys trying their hardest to keep the little boys down.

I am so sick and tired of people saying that BSU wouldn’t stand a chance in this so called “Big boys league” week in and week out! First of all BSU Doesn’t have the same recruiting pool as a major conference does. If they did BSU has a College football system put in place at the University that would be able to play every day of the week all season long! BSU has only been a Division 1 Football program for 11 years. Start giving props for what they have done in such a short period of time. If those so called “Big boy conferences” wanna prove BSU wrong then Offer a one and one series with BSU and prove them wrong. Oregon tried that and look what happened to the PAC 10 Champs. For those who forgot, BSU won in Eugene and in Boise. Stop talking so much trash and put BSU to the challenge. Those two old farts probably should really focus all there energy on what they can do to fix the SEC problems with the NCAA and quit trying to bring BSU down just because there taking some attention from this arrogant conference. Where did sportsmanship go when it comes to college football. All is fair in love and war. Give BSU a chance. They are for real!!!

The colonies of New England weren’t supposed to be able to win a war against the mighty British either.
September 9th, 2010 - 09:59
3 games? Are you kidding me? That’s flat out embarrassing to say.
Memo to the Geezers, Lay off the meds
September 9th, 2010 - 11:05
If they really wanted to find out how we would do, they would make every attempt to play us. They won’t because they’re to scared! Come on, schedule us! Didn’t they play Georgia once and get their butts kicked! If they didn’t its because they’re to afraid! Buc up like the Broncos have!
September 9th, 2010 - 11:28
Is it wrong to hope that BSU wins the NC this year, if only so that these two will have to witness it before they die?
September 9th, 2010 - 12:17
You must play the game to see the result. So for now it’s all speculation.
Bring it to the blue and we can settle it once and for all .

Whats, that smell? Pat did you forget to change Gene’s diaper again?
Sorry, sorry old men, stuck in some good old days fantasy world in their heads because dementia has set in. What others questions should we ask them to give opinions on???
September 9th, 2010 - 12:25
/yawn. Its an old argument. Did they cite their sources? There’s nothing new to their comments.
September 9th, 2010 - 12:56
If they don’t give us what we deserve then more people will be screaming for a play off system to make it right instead all those with the money.
September 9th, 2010 - 14:18
Let’s do this in a way where money and jobs would be on the line if you are wrong. How many teams would Boise be favored to beat on a neutral site from the SEC? Let’s see, I would guess somewhere between 8-10. But we would only win 3? HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! BSU is the best team against the spread in the last decade, and it is not even close.
September 9th, 2010 - 14:31
Uhhh Huhhh… And there ain’t no way Utah could ever beat Alabama either… What a bunch of morons. They talk about being in a grown up league then spew garbage like a couple of under the BCS rugrats
September 9th, 2010 - 21:08
hey geezers, ask your athletic directors to schedule a game with boise state or shut up.
September 9th, 2010 - 22:17
If BSU runs the table and everyone else has 1 loss going into the championship games(conferences) the recruiting edge the BCS schools now hold will diminish quickly and that’s the rub! They cant afford to have BSU do this year after year! If you don’t let them play you home and home how can you GUESS(all it is) how many games they would win in your conference, and who’s to say anyone in your conference is undefeated any longer? Picking a game from 4 years ago is real smart..Kellen Moore is much better than Zabransky and Z beat Oklahoma since then if you must look back!
October 5th, 2010 - 09:41
Boise has played one SEC team and they were whipped at Georgia. So both coaches aren’t speculating, but rather basing it on fact.
October 5th, 2010 - 10:06
Jacksonville State’s win over Ole Miss is more impressive than any win on Boise’s slate. Let’s give Jacksonville State someone’s BCS spot. They have shown they can play in a big boy’s league. Same with U.A.B. who took Tennessee to double overtime. How come I haven’t seen Boise pop back up on an SEC schedule after the Georgia beating? It seems like lil brutha took his ball, ran home and doesn’t want to come back over and play. Sounds more like he’s crying to momma about being left out.

I wonder how say, at least 10 of the SEC or Big 12 teams, would fare playing Boise State’s, TCU’s, or Utah’s schedule?
November 1st, 2010 - 08:03
The issue is week end and week out, not one game, here and there. I wish every team in the SEC would schedule at least one game with Boise State, TCU and Utah every season I’ve heard (not confirmed) Boise State demanded a big payout to play one of our teams? Any truth in that?
