Al Golden does everything but call it the Temple of Doom

Posted on January 10, 2011

"If you're talking about resources, we had the worst facilities..."

While indirectly defending his record against criticisms leveled at him by FOX Sports columnist Jason Whitlock, Al Golden pieced together perhaps the greatest negative recruiting commentary for every one of Temple's conference rivals moving forward.

Whitlock had claimed during an interview on 790 AM in December that Golden should have been expected to win at Temple because it had the "biggest budget" in the MAC.

Golden responded to that claim on the Dan LeBatard radio show:

"If you're talking about resources, we had the worst facilities. We had the smallest weight room. We had the worst academic support. I mean when people say, 'resources.' What resources did we have? We were kicked out of the Big East.

I don't know who is saying that but come walk around in our facility there and look at what we had compared to what Bowling Green has and what Western Michigan has. We don't have an indoor facility. We barely had one practice field when I got there. We had to add the second of a half a field so we have a field and a half. And it's not exactly in Coral Gables, you know what I'm saying?"

When told it was Jason Whitlock who played at Ball State, and prides himself on his MAC knowledge, Golden responded:

"I think Jason should go live on 10th and Diamond in North Philadelphia for a month and then reassess his column."

Here were Whitlock's main talking points from his radio appearance, not a column, a month earlier:

"I think he's a terrible game day coach.

Temple has the biggest budget in the Mid American Conference. They're in a major city. They accept questionable qualifiers as opposed to some of the other MAC schools.

If you spend the most money and you're in a major city and you accept some recruits that other MAC schools might shy away from, you should win games in the Mid American Conference.

I watch MAC football every week. I've had the experience of watching Al Golden coach. He's not very good."
