Reaching out to Tiger Woods, Tim Tebow, and a homeless person...

Charles Barkley spends his basketball broadcasting offseason playing golf and calling into various radio shows on a weekly basis. While generally amusing, they're not usually all that notable... except for today when he started his appearance on the Dan LeBatard radio show by talking about how he still hasn't gotten a hold of Tiger Woods almost 9 months after the car hit the tree.

"It's been very frustrating and disappointing because every person I talk to, not a single one of us -- and I'm talking probably 20 guys -- have talked to Tiger since all this stuff happened.

"I just want to tell the guy, 'Hey, you got friends and we love you.'"

"He has not talked to a single person since this stuff happened and I don't know how to get in touch with him."

Barkley was not asked why he thinks Woods has not taken the time to respond to him this far removed from the incident that spun his life into a different orbit.

It is ironic that Woods is still trying to distance himself from those who were associated with his "previous life" when one of those people happens to be a media personality with an imperfect, yet beloved image. You know, someone Tiger might do well to pattern himself after in some regard when it comes to rehabbing an image.

Barkley refuses to end the interview until he makes one final statement on another much talked about athlete:

"I've gotta give a shout out. I want to give a shout out, I've never met this kid but I like him. I want to give a shout out to Tim Tebow because it drives me crazy that you have the one kid down in Dallas complaining about carrying shoulder pads and for Tim Tebow to let them cut his hair like that? That was pretty damn cool."

Then, as if on cue from the heavens, Barkley engages in a separate conversation while still on the phone with the radio station:

Unidentified Woman: "Thank you."

Barkley: "You're welcome... oh, I look familiar? I'm Charles Barkley, baby."

Woman: "Oh!"

Barkley: "You're welcome."

He then returns to the interview:

"I'm giving this homeless person some money. She's on the side of the road. I'm giving her some money. She's like, 'You look like somebody.' I said, 'Charles Barkley, baby.'"

"She had a sign that said, 'Very Hungry' and I just felt bad for the lady."

"But wasn't that cool of Tim Tebow?"

Very cool, Charles. Very cool.

While doing an interview on 710 AM in Seattle to promote the U.S. Senior Open coming to the Pacific Northwest, Champions Tour player Fred Funk expressed some issues with Tiger Woods's re-entry to the golfing world:

"I was a little turned off by the interview he gave with Peter Kostis after the Masters because it was kind of all about him and not graciousness he should have shown I think or humility a little bit because he did get a great reception from the crowd. It was a great win for Phil (Mickelson). It was great to see Amy (Phil's wife) out. If he said those three things, everybody in the world would still be pulling for him. And I'm still pulling for him. I'd just like to see him get back to a little bit of reality I think."

Even fellow golfers tend to forget that Woods conducted that somewhat gruff interview immediately following his final round and before Mickelson had finished his round which would have made for an awkward congratulations to Phil for a victory that hadn't happened yet.

Tiger Woods is in the market for a new swing coach after parting ways with Hank Haney but broadcaster and former pro golfer Johnny Miller doesn't think Butch Harmon will ever rejoin Woods now that he's with Phil Mickelson. Perhaps the biggest reason, as told to Chicago radio station AM 1000 WMVP:

"Phil, I think, pays him about 5 times more than Tiger did. Butch just loves working with Phil....
...Phil is the most generous athlete maybe that's ever lived. He tips the locker room guy that shines his shoes two thousand dollars. He gives a lot of money to people. Phil is pretty amazing that way."

Um. Whoa.

Like it or not, Tiger is... back. Talking like a golfer. Acting like a guy fully focused on what happens on the course and not on anything else going on his world or anyone else's. When others couldn't fathom Woods even showing up to Augusta a few months ago, I wondered how could he not? Golf is all he's ever cared about. Some may say he cared about women more than golf but that's not true based on his actions. Golf got him power and money. Those things led to the women. Everything starts with the dimpled, white ball and floats downstream from there.

I don't believe Tiger is a sex addict. He's sorry he got caught and will now conform to societal pressures to be the man the rest of the world demands he be. If he falls back into his previous lifestyle now that he knows the full consequences, then I'll believe there is some form of addiction.

Until then, the best golfer on the planet is doing what it took to get to that high plateau in the first place: focusing mostly on golf, then doing whatever it takes to get the rest of the world off his back while hoping it also results in the resurrection of his marriage.

So that he can then get back to playing golf.

Oh, and congratulations to Phil (is it Mickelson?) He just won his third green jacket or something.

Dennis Walters combines golf and... life lessons in a traveling show that spans more than three decades. A trip to Augusta the week of the Masters helped raise more than $10 thousand in conjunction with a charity golf tournament. The money will assist the Walton Foundation in funding camp and golf programs for disadvantaged children.

I told a lot of people I was coming to Augusta to do a show at the First Tee. And they said, 'Wow, you're doing a show at the first tee of Augusta National during the Masters?' I said, "Not exactly."

Walters (to his dog):

Put it on the tee. Yay.

Walters (interview):

Mr. Bucky is awesome.

Walters (to his dog):

2+3! (Dog barks 5 times)

Walters (interview):

Just the fact that he can tee the ball up and answer those questions.

Walters (to dog):

How many tires on a car? (Dog barks 4 times.) Spare tire? (Dog barks once.) Nice.

Walters (interview):

Wow.

Walters (interview):

I've been on tour now for 34 years. This is not exactly the tour I had in mind.

Walters (to audience):

In 1971 I finished 11th in the U.S. Amateur and I missed playing in the Masters by 2 shots. In 1974 I had an accident which left me paralyzed from the waist down.

Walters (interview):

It was in an old 3 wheel golf cart. I was going down a hill. The brakes failed and that's about all I remember.

Walters (to audience):

Back then almost every person I met said it would be impossible. Impossible for me to play golf because I couldn't stand up. So I started hitting golf balls sitting down.

Walters (interview):

I really never thought I could make a career out of it. I was just trying to cope with a situation that was pretty hopeless at the time.

Walters (to audience):

This is a very special 3 iron.

Walters (interview):

That was almost 3 thousand shows ago. You know when I first started doing this I did this all for myself.

Fan (to Walters):

I love your philosopy.

Walters (to fan):

Thanks.

Walters (interview):

But as the years went by and I started to get reactions like this...

Fan (to Walters):

Thank you again. We appreciate it.

Walters (to fan):

You bet. Thanks. Thank you very much.

Walters (interview);

Then I realized that I was getting a gift back in return because I was actually doing something for other people.

Walters (to audience):

Don't try this at home.

Walters (interview):

I think what I have to say is a universal message in that it does apply to everyone and I demonstrate this with every swing I make.

Walters (to audience):

You stop and think about it, almost anything is possible.

(Clapping...)

You know when athletes complain about their words being taken out of context? A deceased Earl Woods may have the first valid case.

In a new commercial that's as subtle as a 9 iron to a car window, Nike pushes hard to engender sympathy for its star client. If Tiger wins the Masters this weekend, you can be guaranteed they already have the next ad at the ready with a "redemption" theme.

That will be followed up by his next major win and another ad with a "back on top with a hint of defiance" theme to it.

But let's get back to using a deceased parent's words to forward your agenda. Does it not feel a bit dirty?
